World Patient Safety Day – 17 September

World Patient Safety Day reminds us that safe care is the foundation of quality healthcare. For those of us in EMS, patient safety starts the moment we respond to a call through vigilance, clear communication, and consistent practice.

This year’s theme, “Patient Safety from the Start!”, emphasises embedding safety into every step of care. In the prehospital setting, that means ensuring dignity, clarity, and compassion from first contact to handover.

At ECSSA, we recognise that strengthening a culture of safety in EMS not only protects our patients but also empowers providers to deliver the highest standard of care. Together, we can make every emergency response safer.

Celebrating Our Heritage, Honouring Our Care

The 24th of September, Heritage Day, is a national celebration of  South Africa’s diverse cultural wealth, traditions, and history.  It’s a day of music, food, storytelling, and unity – where we honour the richness of our “Rainbow Nation”.

For us at ECSSA, Heritage Day carries a deeper meaning. Emergency care itself forms part of our living heritage, a tradition of service, courage, and compassion that unites us across languages, provinces, and communities.

Why it matters for EMS:

Every patient we serve carries a unique story, culture, and background, reminding us that care must be for everyone equally and without exception. Ubuntu lives in our work: “I am because we are” is more than a phrase; it is the essence of how we serve. Each call-out is not just a response to an emergency, but an opportunity to show dignity, compassion, and care to every South African. In this way, emergency care itself becomes part of our living heritage a tradition of service, courage, and compassion that unites us across languages, provinces, and communities.

Our roots and our role today:

In South Africa, EMS is part of a living heritage that continues to grow with every patient, every call-out, and every community we serve. Our strength lies in embracing diversity 12 languages, countless traditions and turning it into a unifying force for compassionate, dignified care. Resilience is not just our history; it is how we meet today’s challenges and prepare for tomorrow’s.

EMS is more than a service; it is a reflection of who we are as a nation: courageous, caring, and united. This Heritage Month, let us celebrate not only our cultural wealth but also the role EMS plays in keeping South Africa safe, strong, and connected.
