The Clinical Committee of the Emergency Care Society of South Africa (ECSSA) serves as the central platform for shaping, improving, and standardising out of hospital clinical practice in South Africa. Aligned with ECSSA’s mission to uplift emergency care, this multidisciplinary committee plays a pivotal role in guiding clinical integration, innovation, and education across all levels of care.

What the Clinical Committee Does:

• Develops and Ratifies Clinical Tools: Leads the creation and approval of evidence-informed clinical protocols, guidelines, and training resources tailored to the South African out of hospital context.

• Fosters Collaboration Across the System: Brings together public and private EMS providers, hospital-based clinicians, flight medics, educators, and policymakers to build a more integrated emergency care system.

• Influences Policy and National Frameworks: Actively engages with regulatory and legislative bodies to shape policy and promote reforms that support high-quality out of hospital services.

• Supports Workforce Development: Identifies training needs and competency gaps across the sector, supports continuing professional development (CPD), and contributes to national clinical education strategies.

• Champions Standardisation and Resource Access: Works toward nationwide consistency in clinical practice by producing, disseminating, and overseeing the equitable distribution of essential clinical materials and medical resources.

Objectives: Short-Term Focus: Establish foundational protocols, conduct national gap analyses, engage stakeholders, assess training needs, and design a central resource repository.
